Your tires, being the point of contact with the road, are the most important part of your vehicle.  Tires should be inspected before every trip and as often as possible to ensure you are driving a safe vehicle.

  1. Check tire pressure often. You can see the recommended tire pressure of a vehicle’s tire on the sidewall of a tire.  If your tire is having trouble holding air, please bring it into Hometown Service Center to get it checked out.
  2. Check the tread and shoulder of your tires for irregular wear or flat spots. If you start to see “stubble” or wire, your tire needs to be replaced.
  3. While checking your tires, check for inconsistent tread depths. The cause of this is incorrect tire pressure.  Make sure to use an accurate tire pressure gauge.
  4. Check the sidewalls of your tires. You make find wear on your sidewalls from oil leaks or even foreign objects.  Washing off any debris and keeping your tires clean, will help the wear of your tires.
  5. Inspect your tires for cracks, cuts, snags, or splits in your tires.
  6. Inspect your tires for bulges or separation from the belt of the tire. This can be caused by a defective tire or an extreme impact to the tire.
  7. Check your valve stems and make sure air is not leaking from this area Loose or damaged valve stems are the leading cause for an air leak.
  8. Check your lugs on the wheels. This is important because this holds the wheel on the vehicle.  Make sure there is no space between the lug and the wheel.
  9. Rust and corrosion are another reason your tire can be losing air. If you find rust or corrosion, this needs to be removed as soon as possible to repair or prevent an air leak.
  10. The Penny Test! To check for worn tread, grab a penny, and if you can see the top of Lincolns head, your tires are worn and need to be replaced.  Come to Hometown Shell for the best tire prices around.
